Saltblood by T.C. Parker
Saltblood is Parker’s intricate love story between folklore and horror motifs. Disquieting and wholly engrossing. Saltblood by T.C. Parker is another astounding blow to the imagination. Everything comes to life in a wonderous but brutal production of a dystopian and mythological dreamscape. After reading Maiden last year I knew I had to dive into Parker’s affinity for sea horror – she captures the malevolence and the fear of the unknown with a practiced flourish. I’m excited to see what she comes up with next in the genre. She has herself a long-time fan! The synopsis immediately reeled me in. A dystopian future where outrage is monitored and given a numerical…

Forsaken (Shadow Cove Saga #1) by J.D. Barker
Forsaken rattles along at a breakneck pace with a plot that outshines its expectations from just a few pages. I made a silent vow to myself that during 2023 I was going to read more from my TBR. I love reviewing for authors but I have neglected the books I’ve collected over the years. So, my first pick was Forsaken by J.D. Barker, and boy it didn’t disappoint. A story of a writer who has penned his best novel yet is so good that it comes to life. His life is turned upside down – with the details of his story coming to him, not only in dreams but in…

Awake in the Night by Shauna McEleney
Our lives are made up of threads and stories. It’s what makes us unashamedly us. We must roll with the dice, there are going to be good times and bad. We’ll meet people who enrich us and people that will leave us with a bad taste in our mouths. We all experience these moments, and it is with that that we leave ties, invisible bonds that make us who we are. Awake in the Night was told in the dual POV of Nicole and Grace, the past and the present colliding with the impact of a supernova. Nicole and her partner, Jess, moved into a beautiful home on Montpellier Street…

Fleshed Out by Rob Ulitski – REVIEW
Fleshed Out proves that its bark is just as devastating as its bite. Ulitski handles his wide range of characters with the finesse of a master storyteller. I can’t quite believe this is his DEBUT because there are novels out there that don’t have the nuance and unbridled skill that this one does. Fleshed Out is a short story anthology that is perpetually locked in the dark. It’s banging on the door demanding release, it’s insistent, it needs to be heard, to be listened to. When you finally give in and let it out, you question whether you would’ve ever truly been ready for it. A collection of body horror…

A Sliver of Darkness by C.J. Tudor – REVIEW
A Sliver of Darkness is C.J. Tudor’s inaugural short story collection. I’ve always said that short story collections are always going to be difficult to rate. You’re not going to love every single story, but if at least a few resonate within you, then it’s a win. I’ve not had the opportunity to read Tudor’s work previously, I know, please don’t come for me! I will be changing that pronto. Each story was complex and atmospheric, and it didn’t take much for me to envisage myself in the protagonist’s shoes, it’s safe to say every story was fully immersive. A Sliver of Darkness feels a little like a treasure map…
