Demons are real.

Richard knows because he has listened to them his entire life. No longer able to bear their screams echoing in his head, he embarks on a rampage of deranged violence, leaving a trail of mutilated bodies and viscera in his wake.

Now, Richard must traverse the terrifying landscape of hell, guided by his lustful demoness through the myriad of torments and tortures laid out before him. There is no hope, no kindness, no mercy. There is only the pain of damnation and the laughter of blood-thirsting demons.

Unclean Verses is an Extreme Horror Re-Imagining of Dante's Inferno by the author of War of Dictates and Abhorrent Siren.

Unclean Verses by John Baltisberger…Wow. An extreme horror retelling of Dante’s Inferno? Yes please.  Poetic, haunting and oh so very dark. This is a story that will leave you feeling bereft at the visceral imagery.

Vivid depictions of murder, sexual assault.

My Review of Unclean Verses

Unclean Verses is book four in my Godless January Readathon. If you’d like to join in please feel free.

Unclean Verses is an extreme horror story based around Dante’s inferno. It’s no secret that I love the original story of Dante’s Inferno, so, to have an extreme horror retelling of it, made me a very excited girl indeed. I won’t go into too much detail about it, but I’ll whisper about it and then shout at you to go and buy it. Deal? Okay, deal.

This is my first Baltisberger book, and I’m not shy in telling you that it won’t be my last. I can’t comment on his previous works but, Unclean Verses is a PhD in short form characterisation. Now with it being a novella, you’d think that the reader couldn’t possibly develop any meaningful connections with the characters. You’d be dead wrong. Baltisberger’s characterisation is out of this world. I hated the antagonist with every nerve ending available to me. I felt my jaw tighten, the room around me closing in as I was exposed to his actions.

Another book that brought out these visceral reactions was Brother by Ania Ahlborn, you can find my review here.

‘The hacksaw I used on Lisa’s legs is in the well and her tendons are in my teeth.’

Unclean Verses by John Baltisberger is strangely poetic, and the author has an unchallenged understanding of human nature. The atmosphere of the journey through hell is bloody devastating.

‘I would take a swig and off to neverland i would be the Peter Pan of debauchery, each act of valid depravity would never grow old.’

Unclean Verses is beautifully crafted. I was a little confused when I began to read the initial few pages because it isn’t put together like a regular book. It is however, crafted to read like Dante’s Inferno and I really appreciated that attention to detail. Each level of hell is so exquisitely researched and put together in this dark retelling. I’m not going to lie; it is very dark so if that bothers you then maybe this book isn’t for you. For extreme horror fans this is a must read and should immediately be put as a priority in your never ending TBR.

The book can be bought from Godless here.

Unclean Verses is so good, so gripping, so very dark. Sublimely executed.
