A young girl taken. Now the clock is ticking.
When fifteen-year-old Hollie, daughter of the UK’s biggest munitions dealer Sir Richard Hawkins, vanishes without a trace, the race is on to find her.
But the family’s worst nightmare is realised when they receive a video of Hollie tied to a chair with a masked man holding a gun to her head. The ransom demands are simple - pay four million pounds or they’ll never see their daughter again.
DCI Jane Phillips is assigned to the case and soon realises that Hollie has been kidnapped by an especially ruthless gang – who will stop at nothing to get what they want.
As the pressure mounts, can Phillips find Hollie before it’s too late? Or will this investigation signal not only the death of the Major Crimes Unit but one of her beloved team as well?
Deadly Vengeance – the third in a gripping new detective series featuring DCI Jane Phillips.
It’s safe to say that I never hesitate or falter when I see a new book released by OMJ Ryan in The Jane Phillips series – Deadly Vengeance continued the upward trend and didn’t disappoint.
Deadly Vengeance has just cemented the notion that OMJ Ryan is now slotted in on my go-to-author list. This series just gets better and better. The drama, the non-stop action, the pace and the narrative that is always as sharp as a stiletto just has me coming back for more. What can I say, it’s like a drug. If you want a feel for how his other books had me hooked, check out my reviews for Deadly Silence and Deadly Waters.
The latest instalment tackles something different and fresh from the first two outings. Although I love a grisly murder mystery, I loved the kidnapping case that lands on Jane Phillip’s desk. It isn’t usually a serious crimes department jurisdiction, but police politics are at play. The setting was vivid, and the author as always captured the scene and effortlessly inserted his readers into the middle of the case. I witnessed the opulence and the privilege of the victim’s family. I pictured the underbelly of Manchester, could hear the traffic, see the views and feel the pressures of outside influence affecting the outcome of the case.
The story is encapsulated by one word – character. Our protagonists and antagonists create a realistic world. Human nature is at the forefront of the plot and how human experiences from our past and present dictate our actions, good or bad. Deadly Vengeance uses this connection has the reader lapping out of the palm of the authors hand.
A life of extreme privilege. A past that just doesn’t quit. The old adage that money can’t buy you happiness. A kidnapping plan that is planned with military precision. Jane Phillips is probably one of my favourite female detective characters. She’s spunky and doesn’t suffer fools gladly. Her attitude in Deadly Vengeance, I’m pleased to say hasn’t changed any. She has her hands full with multiple red herrings, outside interference from a Weasley detective from the metropolitan police. A crime that has literally left no clues to be gleamed and military veterans that have more going on under the surface than they let on. The book was exquisite, and the plot was off the scale – I felt like I was stuck in a snow storm without a jacket…I was blind and cold to certain individuals, but it was invigorating.
As always, I loved the relationship and closeness of DCI Phillips serious crimes team. Jones, Bov and Entwistle and with the introduction of a potential new team member, I was all in. Opening this book up on my kindle was like reacquainting myself with old friends. OMJ Ryan keeps dangling the carrot in front of me and I can’t help but reach for it. I really can’t wait to see where he takes my favourite detective series in book 4.
Deadly Vengeance has the perfect combination of a creeping sense of foreboding and tension. The ending felt like a slap across the face, absolute perfection.
Massive thanks to Emma @damppebbles for my spot on the tour. As always it’s been a pleasure to be apart of it.
