What Goes Around

Publisher: Empress in Press
Alice has been playing the perfect Southern wife for over twenty-five years. So when Bob dumps her for some blonde bimbo twenty years her junior, Alice figures she’s entitled to every dollar she can bleed from him. And, once she’s got the money, she’s entitled to use it on a much-needed vacation to Nanm Paradi, a Caribbean resort that sells itself as her “soul’s paradise”.
She’s never experienced anything as luxurious as Nanm Paradi. The staff know her every desire and cater to her every need before she even knows she needs it. She figures this is how the really rich live and she’s ready to take advantage of all of it–the fabulous drinks, the beautiful views, and the handsome men. And when she discovers that voodoo magic is also on offer… well, Bob hurt her bad. She can take some time away from paradise to exact a little pain. Alice would have been happy to leave things at that.
But when she gets hit where it hurts–her bank account–Alice’s game changes. It’s no longer about post-divorce romance. Now it’s about revenge.
What Goes Around is a little bit thriller, a little bit witchy, a little bit romance, and a whole lot of sass.
Thanks to Emma @Damppebbles for my spot on the blogtour and a copy of the book. All my thoughts are my own.
I think Alice represents what most women are feeling within a relationship. I think most of us can appreciate and connect with what she is feeling. She’s a relatable figure and she has our sympathy and camaraderie at witnessing her at her lowest point. The author tackles a serious topic and brings humour and a great story to boot. Witchy voodoo and retribution against a dick of a husband has me instantly hooked.
Alice uses her wits to exact revenge on her ex-husband in the best possible way. What could be better than exacting revenge on the man that controlled you and only used you as arm candy to then call time on a near 30-year marriage. He is despicable and quite frankly he deserved everything that was coming his way. The author had made me despise the character before we were fully introduced to him, then when we were well, the hatred took root and grew.
Alice got divorced from the slime bag and knew she needed to get away. After all the heartache she knew she deserved some “me” time. She spotted an advert online for a luxury holiday and now that her bank account was full to the brim after taking that douchebag ex to the cleaners it was time to bask and enjoy her newfound financial freedom. She loved the resort, it was good for her mental health but always in the back of her mind was the evil of her ex-husband. Could she shake it off and forget about him or was she going to get even? The staff at the resort could see her sadness and perpetual gloom, they knew what was needed and would convince her of it too. This little conversation led to her being recommended an awesome lady that could sell her a trinket that would solve all her problems. All she had to do was believe it was possible. Seriously just read it, I shared a little shiver of glee at what Alice got up to.
This was my first outing by Rachel Ellyn, she certainly has a way with words and the magic and hilarity she brought into her storytelling had me laughing, sharing her anguish and rooting for her to get the douche where it hurts – his wallet and his health. There is an interesting twist, so it did keep me entertained through-out the book. It’s a story of the feminist wiles and the tale as old as time – there’s no woman quite like a scorned one.
I just wish the story had been a bit longer. At 120 pages it was over as quickly as it had begun because I couldn’t put it down. I wanted more depth to the characters and the storyline – yeah okay, I’ll admit it – I wanted more evil revenge for that ex of hers. He deserved something more drawn out and painful, but maybe that’s the sadist in me. Independent woman rule out! Despite that I really enjoyed the story and the message the author was sending. I just wanted more.
A Story of emotions. A story of betrayal and revenge. What Goes Around is the perfect beach read or the perfect accompaniment to embracing our desire to protect ourselves at all costs.
